One Room Challenge ~ Tween Room {Week One}

My first project of the year and my one room challenge room, is our son Collin's bedroom.  It's long overdue; the poor kid has lived with flesh-colored walls and questionable carpet since we moved in.  Brennan's nursery was even worse when we moved in, so that took precedence.  All gray paneling and teal astro-turf-like carpet.  Collin hit the room jackpot though...it's big, bright and has a bigger walk-in closet than me!

We spent a snowy weekend peeling off tons of transformer decals from the walls and glow-in-the-dark stars from the ceiling.  Cleaning out drawers and packing away stuffed animals (sniff).  He's 10 now, he gets adult innuendo, it's time.

The plan is as follows:

1. Paint - samples below of Benjamin Moore's Hale Navy and Van Deusen Blue.  We ultimately decided on Van Deusen Blue, and are loving the results.

2. Carpet - I'm old school, Carpet in bedrooms.  Will be looking for a sand-esque color berber.

3. Furniture switch - The 5yo is getting the bunk beds with plentiful storage in his smaller room.  He also has the gold standard in carpet padding, so if he falls out, it's all good. {wink}.  Collin will be getting an antique brass full bed (pictured below) and Brennan's dresser and nightstand. I'm still undecided about the brass bed, paint or restore?

4. Furniture purchase - A desk, chair and some sort of upholstery for the window seat. Perhaps I'll get creative and make a cushion?

5. Lighting - Task lighting and ceiling fixture.

6. Artwork, Accessories and bedding - I'm shopping my inventory for some items, like the black and white beach scenes pictured below.  I will no longer buy items just to fill a space...we have to love it.

Tween Room Remodel

2 days in a row...how about that?!

My first project of the year and possibly a One Room Challenge room, is our son Collin's bedroom.

The plan is as follows:

1. Paint - samples below of BM's Hale Navy or Van Deusen Blue.  I'm leaning toward VDBlue, but ultimately it's his choice.

2. Carpet - I'm old school, Carpet in bedrooms.

4. Furniture purchase - A desk, chair and some sort of upholstery for the window seat. Perhaps I'll get creative and make a cushion?

5. Lighting - New lamps and ceiling fixture.

The Little one will be getting a makeover of his own as well.  That I will share as well.  It's time to move on, our babies are growing up.

As always, thanks for visiting!

Inherited Brass Bed...To Paint or Not?

I'm back again...hope your summer was amazing!

I graciously received a brass bed from an old family friend this past week.  It's been in and about the family for generations really, and I am happy that I can rehab it for my boys.  The question is to restore or paint. Paint is so easy and will make it pop, but I don't know if I want to compromise the integrity of the piece itself.  It's quite old.
Decisions, decisions.

Here's my inheritance (terrible pic).  I am not sure which child will be getting it yet, I am trying to switch rooms around and neither is cooperating.  Either way, this bed will grace a boys room, so it's needs to stay somewhat masculine, i.e. no pink, aqua, etc..

Oil-rubbed bronze is intriguing me too...kind of like meeting in the middle?

Here are some inspiration photos that I've been throwing around...

{If I still have any readers left, I'd love your opinions!)

Pottery Barn white version. Can't go wrong with white, ivory or cream.

Edie's beautiful girls room.  Love the Serena and Lily bedding (but again...boys)

So there's my dilemna (old school spelling).  I will be sure to share the final results if + when I get it done...

I hope to be sharing more of our home/garden/kitchen on the blog.  I miss this blog that I consider a journal of sorts, to get my thoughts out there, sane or not!

Hutton Home Office {finish me} ORC Week One

I"m a little late to the ORC Game, but I need the inspiration to finish our office after I've already put time, money and hard work into it.

I've painted, refinished floors, bought a spectacular rug & window treatments and have the furniture ready  to go.  I just lost my oomph with it.  Through the One Room Challenge I shall get the inspiration I need through the mass of talent participating!

Our office before new paint (glad I emptied the trash....)

Awkward layout with a closet built into the room, but its so useful.

Thank heavens I was able to successfully paint OVER the ugly wallpaper border.

A cool, soothing gray.  Love the contrast between the gray and hardwood.

This is about as far as I have gotten with decor & accessorizing.  The children's homework station.

First Impressions

My husband was hospitalized for a stomach ailment over the past weekend, so I felt the need to stay busy, to avoid thinking about his absence (he's home and will be fine, thank goodness).  So I bribed the kid with the iPad, candy and sidewalk chalk and finally started to tackle our side entrance door.

I love the color.  I used Valspar Duramax satin from Lowe's in Claret from the Eddie Bauer Palette.  I'm a huge fan of the Eddie Bauer color line (especially the Bungalow Gold), I have it in almost every room I've painted in our new house.

Before pic with our new light fixture.  Shortly, I will change out the impatiens for pansies & mums and add some chunkier trim around the door.  Perhaps a wreath or a fun doorknocker.  New siding is not an option....until we {when we} win the lottery.

This is one of my inspiration photos.

This is an inspiration photo of what will hopefully be our new front door.  This is where I switch to Home Depot. This is a

6-Lite Craftsman Chestnut Mahogany Fiberglass Entry Door.  Our current front door is a hot mess, I will only share pics after it's GONE.

That's next on the list.

It's amazing how a coat of paint and a simple, low-cost project can lift your spirits.

By the way...look for me on Instagram
